10 Tips for Making Your Poster Display

  1. Plan out your display ahead of time.

  2. Displays should be made up of pieces that can be easily assembled and fastened to the bulleting board at the conference.

  3. Bring thumbtacks, pushpins, tape and other fastening devices to attach the various pieces to the board when you are at the conference.

  4. You won't get the actual poster until the conference, so sketch out your layout on 2 pieces of flipchart paper the size of the poster (4x8). to make sure everything fits.

  5. Any text on the poster should be brief and concise.  Your smallest type should be easy to read from a distance of two feet.

  6. Make sure that the captions are easily associated with the pictures they go with.

  7. Photographs and diagrams must be clear and large enough to be easily identified from a distance of ten feet.

  8. Your pictures and your titles, not your text, are what draw people.  Prioritize them and make them visible and interesting.
  9. Your display will not present itself.  Interact with the people who view your display.  Have a couple of sentences or questions in mind that will grab the attention of your audience.
  10. Make sure your colors contrast instead of blend together.  This will make your poster much easier to read and identify from a distance.
